Review
Drakgengard is a Role Playing Game for PlayStation 2, Square Enix did a great job on this hack and slash
game. The gameplay is pretty good, a mix between slash 'em up, similar to the Dynasty Warriors series
and a something along the lines of a jet fighting game.
The game goes through a series of missions and chapters, each one with a different type of gameplay,
some missions like I previously mentioned are basically running and slicing up big groups of enemies and
unleashing the wrath of a mighty dragon on your prey below, these are called Land Missions. Along side
these missions you also get Flight Missions, where Caim flies on the back of a dragon taking out other
air based enemies.
Unlike other Square Enix RPG's you don't have a party, yet you may switch to an ally half way through a
battle, which can completely change the tide of the battle. Another unique feature is the ability to
change weapons half way through a stage, this can also help change the outcome of the battle.
To help top off the battle system the game has pretty much perfect controls, so you can't really go
wrong with the gameplay of Drakengard.
As for the storyline and characters, I'd probably say they are the downfall of the game, the story is
very dark and quite mysterious so it takes some getting into. You never really get into the role of the
characters because of the fact they have to make a sacrifice for a pact, in the main character, Caim's
case it's his voice. So you never really get to know much of him. When the storyline eventually unfolds
the game does get better but really the concept behind the games story does let it down.
Overall Drakengard does have a great battle system but some things such as the storyline do let it down,
the game has its highs and its lows but in the end this is just an average game.
