Chocobo Training
In the Calm Lands, you'll be able to participate in a series of small mini-games, which allow you to train a chocobo. Each of them present a unique set of challenges; naturally, each one is harder than the one before it.

Wobbly Chocobo:
If you complete this exercise, you will be able to ride a chocobo anytime you want for free, within the Calm Lands.

The goal of this game is to keep your chocobo running straight to the best of your ability, while still crossing the finish line before your time goes past the set goal, and without running outside the line of balloons.

The easiest way to do this is to run down the center of the path. Each time your chocobo runs a certain direction, press down on the opposing direction on your D-Pad on the controller (i.e. Your chocobo runs left, you press right). This will keep the chocobo straight. Keep switching as fast as possible when it is needed, to win.

Don't be discouraged if you lose a couple of times. It takes some patience to complete.

Dodger Chocobo:
Now that your chocobo can run straight, you can now participate in Dodger Chocobo. The goals remain the same as the last exercise (crossing the finish line in time, without running out of bounds). However, you now must dodge incoming blitzballs. If you get hit, your chocobo is stunned and takes a second to gain it's senses.

The best way to complete this, is to stay in the center of the path, and run to either the left or right as soon as you see one flying towards you. Afterwards, immediately run to the center of the path again. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Hyper Dodger Chocobo:
So, you've proven yourself against blitzballs. Nowe you must prove yourself against blitzballs AND birds. The birds have a bit more of a homing capability than the blitzballs, but it's not hopeless in the least.

One additional warning, is that although you may see one blitzball flying towards you, it will split into three, and strike an area.

You can complete this more easily if you stick to either the left or right side (near the ballons). As soon as you see the flying beasts and balls coming towards you, veer to the opposite side. Again: Rinse, wash, repeat.

Catcher Chocobo:
So, now it comes down to it. The trainer wants to challenge you to a race.

You can simply try to beat her, just to prove your worth. Or, you can smash her pride into the ground and attempt to beat her with a time of 0:0:0, and win the Sun Sigil; an item needed to fully activate Tidus' legendary weapon.

Assuming you want to get a time of 0:0:0, I'm assuming you have a lot of patience, and you're a tolerable human being when it comes to getting your butt kicked and losing. If so, here's some tips.

First of all, collect balloons, but DON'T go out of your way to get all of them. Instead, try to figure out which way would be best to pick up the most balloons. However, you must do this as you race, as you don't get an overview of the Calm Lands before the race.

The reason for collecting ballons, is that they subtract 3 seconds from your total time. Birds add 3 seconds automatically, but also an additional 2 (during the race which the trainer doesn't mention), as your chocobo regains it's senses.

The key to winning this race is getting in front of the trainer at the VERY beginning of the race. Head for the very first balloon, as that's what she's going for. Getting in front of her means you get the balloons she'd get instead, which GREATLY increases your chances of winning.

Finally, the last piece of advice is that every SECOND set of birds go for you. The other is for her. However, that being said, you can still be hit by her birds as she can by yours. Also, when a set of birds are heading towards you, screw trying to collect any balloons, and veer left (I mean...do a complete 90 degree angle here). Then when the birds are gone, and only then, should you get back to collecting balloons.

This takes a great deal of luck to complete, along with some practice, so be prepared to lose a lot. However, it is greatly rewarding.
